A better goal is to lower inflammation in your body. Inflammation is the real cause of plaque buildup in the arteries. That’s what leads to atherosclerosis.

Stop taking statins and, instead, try these two steps to curb inflammation and cut the risk of heart attack and stroke:

1. Get more of the omega-3 fat called EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). A recent Japanese study showed that simply having enough EPA in your body lowers the risk of having any cardiac event by 79%.

EPA is an essential fatty acid meaning you can’t make it in your body and you have to get it from food.   EPA helps keep inflammation low, maintains your heart rhythm, and raises HDL, the protective kind of cholesterol.

The best food sources of EPA are grass-fed beef or fatty cold-water fish like salmon.  Chances are you will need a supplement to get enough EPA.  Krill oil is the best source of bioavailable EPA.  The EPA in krill oil is in the “phospholipid” form that penetrates directly into heart cells. Take at least 500 mg of krill oil EPA per day.

2. Lower triglycerides, the heart-stopping blood fat. Triglycerides are more important to track for your heart health than cholesterol. People with high levels of triglycerides have three times the risk of heart disease as people with high LDL levels.

A great way to lower triglycerides is to cut out processed sugar from your food. Research presented at a recent annual meeting of the American Heart Association found that women who drank only two sugary drinks a day were nearly four times as likely to have high triglycerides (high triglycerides is the best predictor of heart risk for women).  High fructose corn syrup is just as bad.

Replace the sugar with more protein. High-quality protein will lower your triglycerides and raise your HDL. The best protein sources are nuts, eggs, grass-fed beef, free-range poultry, and wild-caught salmon.

Another good source of protein and an excellent source of fiber is beans.   Beans lower triglycerides. Their soluble fiber absorbs fats and helps the body excrete them before they can turn into triglycerides. A study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that men who already had high triglycerides were able to lower their triglycerides by 18% by adding canned beans to their daily diet.

Should I stop taking statins?  Many doctors believe that it’s silly to worry about statin side effects. The truth is, you should stay away from statins not only for the side effects, but because cholesterol is a good thing.

A 10-year study in the prestigious journal Lancet proved people with higher cholesterol had a lower risk of dying from any cause.
